I grew up around a little mom-and-pop family business. My parents worked arm-and-arm and "just knew" what needed to happen each day. 

When I was 12, all of that changed in the middle of a family indoor volleyball game. I was standing a few feet away as a stray ball hit the ceiling. The ball came down, followed by a heavy chunk of wood that had been used to patch a ceiling hole.


The wood board smacked down directly between my dad's eyes. He survived but life with a brain injury changed everything for our family… and the small business that paid our bills.
